The LA28 Windfall: A Projected $40 Billion Economic Impact

For decades, the narrative surrounding the Olympic Games has been dominated by cost overruns and abandoned infrastructure. The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28) are poised to completely invert that script.

According to a massive new economic analysis released this week by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), the LA28 Games are projected to generate a staggering economic output of between $20.5 billion and $40.6 billion across the five-county Greater Los Angeles region [1].

What makes these numbers so remarkable is the methodology behind them. LA28 is famously utilizing a “no-build” approach, meaning the organizing committee is not constructing a single new permanent venue for the Games. Instead of spending billions on hyper-specific stadiums that risk becoming white elephants, an estimated $8.35 billion in capital investment is being aggressively channeled into updating existing world-class venues, improving regional mobility, and modernizing transportation and airport infrastructure [1].

The employment impact will be equally transformative. The LAEDC report estimates that the planning, preparation, and execution of the Games will support between 126,000 and 224,000 jobs across Southern California [1]. These roles will span construction, transportation, security, hospitality, and administrative support, offering a broad spectrum of opportunities for the local workforce.

As LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover noted following the report’s release, the goal is to ensure the impact is felt far beyond the moment the last medal is awarded, driving investments that strengthen communities for generations [1].
