The Agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The primary objective of the proposed special session is to push through the Delimitation Bill and the Women’s Reservation Bill, which are part of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill. The Women’s Reservation Bill seeks to mandate a 33% quota for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, but its implementation is tied directly to the redrawing of constituencies (delimitation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why a Special Session?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislation previously failed to garner the required two-thirds special majority (at least 360 MPs in the Lok Sabha) during a sitting in April 2026, receiving 298 votes in favor and 230 against.<\/sup> While the recent Monsoon Session was adjourned sine die<\/em> on August 13, it has not officially been prorogued, leaving the legislative door open for the government to call a special sitting.<\/sup> According to India Today<\/a>, the government may consider timing the session around the Navratri festival, leveraging the period’s symbolic connection to women’s empowerment.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political Maneuvering for the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the bill’s passage this time, the BJP-led NDA has been heavily courting regional parties to bridge the numbers gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
